Victoria Falls and Great Migration

Victoria Falls and Maasai Mara (7 days)

Itinerary overview

This tour combines the very best safari and adventure activities of Southern and East Africa. Experience one full week witnessing Southern and East Africa’s greatest natural wonders, from Zimbabwe’s thundering Victoria Falls to Kenya’s wildlife-packed Maasai Mara.

Touch down in Victoria Falls to experience ‘The Smoke that Thunders’, including bucket-list experiences such as a helicopter flip over the frothing majesty of the Falls to a retreat to your room on the banks of the mighty Zambezi River, soaking in the endless views.

Although it will be hard to leave your first destination, an East African safari awaits. After a stopover in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, continue to the world-famous Maasai Mara National Reserve. Here you’ll spend two nights suspended off the edge of the Great Rift Valley at Angama Mara with phenomenal year-round game viewing over the beautiful Maasai Mara, host to a chapter of The Great Migration.

Day 1 - 4

Victoria Falls

Matetsi Victoria Falls

At Matetsi Victoria Falls, it’s all about the small moments we like to refer to as Matesti Magic. It was the Gardiner family’s vision to showcase everything exceptional about their home country, Zimbabwe. This was realised by shining a light on local artisans and creating a conservation legacy for future generations. From the distinctly African interior design to the warm hospitality our home soil is known for, Matesti Victoria Falls is the ultimate base for exploring the Falls and wildlife-packed landscapes. Here you will experience riverside living at its finest, with the mighty Zambezi lulling you to sleep.

Why we recommend

  • The ultimate combination itinerary, including safari, river, and Victoria Falls adrenaline adventures balanced with tranquillity.
  • The Victoria Falls, also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke that Thunders), is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.
  • Matetsi Private Game Reserve has 15km of exclusive river frontage and is set on 136,000 acres of pristine bush, ensuring a truly exclusive safari experience.
  • Privately owned and managed by the Gardiner family, who have a passion for conservation and social development

Day 4

Nairobi

Hemingways

Luxury is the name of the game at Hemingways, located in the city centre of Nairobi. You’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time with its vintage East African décor, and with all the luxuries you could need at your fingertips, you can refresh for the rest of your adventure ahead.

Why we recommend

  • Prime location for a stopover in Nairobi before continuing on your East African safari
  • In the heart of the capital city, allowing you to explore all the local attractions
  • Step back in time and into the “Out of Africa” film at the Karen Blixen Museum
  • Onsite Serenity Spa to indulge your senses and refresh after your flight

Day 5 - 7

Maasai Mara

Angama Mara

Suspended in mid-air, somewhere between heaven and earth, Angama Mara gives you the ultimate vantage point of the Maasai Mara Plains, Angama Mara is your front-row-seat to East Africa’s grandeur and greatest spectacles.

Why we recommend

  • Angama Mara is a remarkable owner-run safari lodge.
  • Daily activities are tailor-made, flexible and not according to a schedule.
  • View Africa’s animals as you silently float above and past them in a hot air balloon, an experience for which the Mara is famous.
  • Extraordinary game-viewing 12-months of the year and front row seats to the annual Wildebeest Migration.

Frequently Asked Questions

An average between low and high season pricing has been used to create an average cost as a rough indication only. Seasonal and tactical offers and deals exist at most of the properties in our featured African itineraries. We have not included these in the calculations for now and will apply them according to the dates and season you want to travel. Please enquire for exact pricing for your intended travel dates.
All year round is good and each time of the year has a different appeal. At Victoria Falls, October can be incredibly humid and hot and in East Africa, the main rainy season falls over March, April and May. Angama Mara does not shut down, however, and with fewer vehicles around, the experience will be an even more exclusive one. In the Victoria Falls area, the ‘Low Water’ period runs between August and January and is at its lowest between November and early December. The best views of the Falls at this time will be Devil’s Cataract which is permanent and on the Zimbabwean side of Victoria Falls. Low water also comes with other benefits such as activities that can only be done exclusively during low water, such as a visit to Livingstone island and world-famous River Rafting on the Zambezi rapids.
Zimbabwe and Kenya are included in this tour. Most nationalities can secure a visa on arrival into the country or online via the respective e-visa portals for each country. Zimbabwe’s e-visa portal can be accessed at https://www.evisa.gov.zw/regime and Kenya’s offical e-visa portal at https://evisa.go.ke/. A “Kaza UNIVisa” can be also be arranged for both sides of Victoria Falls so that you can also enter Zambia on the same visa in order to see the Falls from both sides. In East Africa, if you are planning to add either Rwanda or Uganda to your itinerary, a single East Africa Tourist Visa can be arranged. Please check your eligibility for these visa-types online.
Good advice for travel in both Zimbabwe or Kenya is to make sure that you have US Currency in small denominations (and issued after 2010) for all purchases. Credit card payments are accepted as well for payments at hotels and lodges although it is better to have USD for tipping and for purchases from markets and shops. Many vendors do not accept American Express so it would be better to travel with either Visa or Mastercard.
